Erg Chigaga Wild Sahara Expedition
Four days venturing into Morocco’s largest, wildest, and most remote sand sea: the monumental dunes of Erg Chigaga.
Expedition Overview
About This Journey
Venture into Morocco’s largest and wildest sand sea: Erg Chigaga. Unlike the more accessible dunes of Merzouga, Chigaga is untouched wilderness stretching 40 kilometers across the southern horizon with waves of sand rising up to 300 meters. Accessible only by two to three hours of rugged 4x4 driving beyond the road’s end at M’Hamid, this 4-day expedition traverses the ancient Draa Valley caravan route, explores the dry salt lakebed of Lac Iriqui, and camps in remote solitude beneath unpolluted night skies.
Trip Highlights
- ✦Explore Morocco’s wildest and most isolated dune system (Erg Chigaga)
- ✦Two hours of thrilling off-road 4WD desert driving across former Paris-Dakar tracks
- ✦Two nights in a secluded wilderness desert camp deep within the dunes
- ✦Hike to the summit of Chigaga’s highest 300-meter dune for sunset
- ✦Cross the surreal, cracked clay surface of the dried lakebed Lac Iriqui
- ✦Authentic Sahrawi nomads, campfire storytelling, and traditional sand-bread baking

Day-by-Day Route
Detailed Itinerary
Marrakech across Tichka Pass to Ouarzazate & the Draa Valley (Agdz)
Depart Marrakech, traversing the High Atlas over Tizi n’Tichka (2,260 m). Drop down into the southern pre-desert terrain, stopping to explore the Kasbah of Taourirt in Ouarzazate. Ascend through the rugged black volcanic mountains of the Anti-Atlas (Tizi n’Tinififft) before descending into the palm-dense oasis of the Draa Valley. Arrive at our boutique riverside Kasbah in the historic village of Agdz for an evening meal on the garden terrace.
Draa Valley, Tamgroute Ancient Library & Off-Road into Erg Chigaga
Drive south along the ancient camel caravan trail through Zagora. Stop in Tamgroute to tour the historic 17th-century Quranic library with manuscripts written on gazelle hide, and witness traditional green-glaze earthenware baking in subterranean kilns. Reach M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the final village before the paved road ends. Deflate tires and venture off-road into the wild Sahara across dry wadis and acacia plains. Reach our remote desert camp tucked into the golden folds of Erg Chigaga by late afternoon. Sunset camel ride across the untouched dunes followed by dinner around the hearth.
Deep Dune Exploration & Sunset Summit of the High Crest
Wake in the pure silence of the deep Sahara. Spend the morning on foot exploring the undulating ridges with your Sahrawi guide, learning how nomadic shepherds navigate by the stars and read animal tracks in the sand. Witness traditional sand bread ("Medfouna") baked directly under hot embers. In late afternoon, hike up the highest crest of Erg Chigaga (rising almost 300 meters above the desert floor) to witness the sunset over hundreds of square kilometers of untouched sand seas. Acoustic nomadic songs and stargazing under the Milky Way.
Lac Iriqui Salt Flats to Foum Zguid & Return to Marrakech
Depart camp after sunrise, driving west across the vast, dried clay playa of Lac Iriqui, former host to the grueling Paris-Dakar rally. Spot desert mirages and fossil beds before reaching the frontier town of Foum Zguid. Re-inflate tires and join the paved road through Taznakht, famous for geometric Berber carpets. Continue back across the High Atlas, arriving in Marrakech by early evening.
